The Power Service Story

When Al Kramer mixed up the first batch of Power Service Diesel Fuel Supplement in his garage in 1956, he knew he was onto something. It simply worked better than anything he had seen during his years as a chemist for a major oil company.

Al's son, Ed Kramer, helped market Power Service, taking it directly to the truckers who needed it. With a simple shaker test in the parking lot a local truckstop, he put Power Service up against the leading diesel fuel additives. The results were undeniable. Power Service simply dispersed water faster and more completely than anything on the market. The truckers took note and so did the truckstop owner who agreed to carry the product.

When Ed took over management of the business in 1971, he had only one product to sell. He knew that a strong national distributor network was essential to the company's growth and success, so he used the same resourcefulness he showed early on in his career, and immediately began securing new warehouse distributors. By 1976, Power Service Diesel Fuel Supplement was available coast-to-coast, and by 1981 was the nation's best seller — a title still held today.

The distribution network in place, Power Service then began developing diesel-fuel treatments to meet the needs of major fleets wanting reliable winter-fuel operability at a low per-gallon treatment cost. About that same time, premium diesel fuel sales were just taking off, so Power Service started developing products to give fuel-jobbers and truckstops the competitive edge they needed for premium fuel sales.

What started over 45 years ago in a small, one-car garage has grown into one of the industry's biggest and most endearing success stories.  RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT


Power Service's sophisticated testing laboratory has revealed variants in diesel fuel and aided in the development of many new additives.

Ongoing tests allow our chemists to develop products which provide a more consistent, better-running fuel for our customers. After new formulations are found, their capabilities are first proven through lab testing and then through use testing by the industry's toughest critics — fleet professionals themselves. These practices were integral in the introduction of Arctic Express Diesel Fuel Antigel and Diesel Kleen Performance Improver.


 ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES CREATE NEW CHALLENGES

Power Service's testing and research facilities are also key in addressing issues associated with ever-changing government regulations. In 1993, new EPA regulations lowered the amount of sulfur in diesel fuel from a maximum of 5,000 parts per million to a maximum of 500 parts per million in order to reduce harmful emissions. The Power Service Research Team evaluated the effects this legislation would have on diesel engines and made significant formulation changes in our additives that addressed lubrication and fuel gelling issues beyond those expected by diesel fuel suppliers. Being at the forefront of these issues keeps Power Service diesel fuel additives the most technologically advanced in the marketplace.

Environmental issues will again be addressed with EPA legislation that will become effective in 2006. These changes in the physical composition of diesel fuel are necessary for the protection of our environment. These changes will present new and more difficult challenges to the Power Service Research Team. We are already preparing for these challenges and will maintain our competitive advantage through the introduction of new and exciting technological improvements in our line of diesel fuel additives.
